A PhD candidate from King’s College London in England recently attended the 22nd Zawti Shan novitiation and ordination ceremony in Mohnyin Twonship in Kachin State.
“There is little Western literature that focuses solely on the Zawti and as a result, the tradition has sometimes been misunderstood,” said Ms Olivia Porte, a PhD student at King’s College London.
“My PhD thesis focuses on Shan Buddhism and I am particularly interested in the Zawti tradition,” said the visiting research scholar at Shan State Buddhist University.

The Union Supreme Court and the Supreme Court of Singapore signed the Memorandum of Guidance as to Enforcement of Money Judgments yesterday.
The signing ceremony was held at the meeting hall of the Union Supreme Court in Nay Pyi Taw. Chief Justice U Htun Htun Oo and The Hon Sundaresh Menon, Singapore Supreme Court’s Chief Justice, signed and exchanged the memorandum.

Certificates were conferred to the trainees who completed renewable energy courses conducted under the MoU between the Ministry of Electricity and Energy and the Embassy of Denmark in Yangon with the support of the World Wide Fund-Myanmar.
Union Minister U Win Khaing made a speech at the ceremony held at his office in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday afternoon.
He said the MoU was signed on 9 February 2018 for more efficient use of renewable energy in Myanmar.

THE University of Nursing in Yangon hosted a dinner to mark its 26th graduation ceremony on its campus on 8 February evening.
Union Minister for Health and Sports Dr Myint Htwe attended the dinner, and delivered a congratulatory speech urging the nursing graduates to continue further learning for advanced levels.
A total of 306 newly graduated nurses from Yangon and Mandalay will be employed soon at relevant hospitals for public healthcare services.

A flower festival will be held at the Water Fountain Garden in Zabuthiri Township of Nay Pyi Taw Council Area from 14 February to 31 March.
The first event of its kind in the capital city of Myanmar will be celebrated together with entertainment programmes of famous singers, while young vocalists from Myanmar Idol will sing on the weekends till 31 March.

LED by Union Minister U Kyaw Tin of the Ministry of International Cooperation, officials from the foreign embassies in Myanmar and their families flew to Myeik from Dawei yesterday.
The diplomats and families toured the Myeik River by in a launch, and studied the surroundings of Pa Htaw Pa Htet Island. They also visited the Atu Lan Thi Shwe Thar Lyaung Pagoda on Pa Htet Island, and studied soft shell crab farming of Phae Phyo Tun Company.
In the afternoon, the diplo-mats visited Laykyun Si Mi Pagoda, natural bird nest house and Myeik Shopping Centre in Myeik Town.
