SUPERVISED by the Anti-Illegal Trade Steering Committee, effective action is being taken to prevent illegal trade under the law.

On 4 May, a joint team led by the Yangon North District Forest Department and the Myanmar Police conducted an investigation under the auspices of the Yangon Region Anti-Illegal Trade Task Force.

A total of 2.3020 tonnes of illegal teak (estimated at K690,600) and two vehicles carrying the timbers (approximately K30,000,000) were seized on the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway, Hlegu Township.

Similarly, 7.6314 tonnes of illegal timbers (estimated at K1,526,280) and a 10-wheel Nissan UD truck carrying these timbers (estimated at K45,000,000), and a total value of K77,216,880 were seized near Milepost 51/2, Yangon-Pyay Road, Taikkyi Township. The action was taken under the Forest Law.

In addition, the Customs and Excise Team inspected the container terminal of Myanmar Industrial Port under the management of the Customs Department on 6 May.

Battery and accessories not listed in the import declaration (ID), clothing, consumer goods and cosmetics (estimated at K125,232,000) were seized and action was taken according to the Customs procedures.

Next, the Customs team inspected the Kawkareik (Tadakyoe) Joint Inspection Station under the management of the Kayin State Anti-Illegal Trade Task Force on 7 May.

During the inspection, LipoVitan-D soft drinks (estimated value of K4,550,000) were seized from a truck and action was taken according to the Customs procedures.

Similarly, a joint inspection team led by the Region Forestry Department conducted an inspection under the management of the Anti-Illegal Trade Task Force.

During their inspection, 0.7050 tonnes of illegal teak logs (estimated value of K141,000) were seized near Milepost 37/0 of the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway and action was taken under the Forest Law. Therefore, 11 arrests (approximately K207,139,880) were made on 4, 6 and 7 May, according to the Steering Committee for Combating Illegal Trade.
