THESE days, young people enjoy reading books that they found online, according to bookshops.
Reading culture has begun to develop among young people, and they especially prefer books that have been published lately.
“Youths are interested in books that are freshly published and become popular over recent years. They don’t know famous writers like Thein Pe Myint, but they are just familiar with Mya Than Tint, Juu and Tekkatho Phone Naing. They come to book shops and hunt books that are under hot topics on Facebook, and they even buy books that are out of stock,” said the owner of Soe Paing bookshop in Kyauktada Township.
Although the price of old books hasn’t climbed up much, new book prices have been high.
“Price can’t be raised in the old books market, but the price of new books has climbed relatively. The price of a new book, which includes around 100 pages, is now around K10,000, which is why production costs have become high. There are almost no big book fairs in Yangon, but small book fairs are occasionally held at supermarkets,” he said.
