AN interfaith ceremony aimed at invoking rain took place at the Kyaikpa Vishnu Temple in Kyauktada Township, Yangon Region, yesterday.

Buddhist monks recited the Ngayintmin (king of snakeheaded fish) Paritta, a traditional chant believed to bring rain. Vocalist Hnin Hnin Htoo and harpist May Aung Lin recited the virtues of Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha.

Additionally, clergies from Hindu, Christianity, and Muslim communities also offered prayers and chants for rain. Organizer Hein Latt, a writer, stated, “This ceremony brings together religious leaders from four major faiths — Buddhism, Islam, Hindu, and Christianity — to invoke rain according to their respective beliefs. Our aim is to propose this tradition as an intangible cultural heritage to UNESCO next year.”

A similar ceremony was conducted five years ago during a period of intense heat waves in the country.
