THE Union Minister for Cooperatives and Rural Development has announced proactive measures to avert potential drinking water shortages in villages anticipated for the summer of 2024. The ministry is actively engaged in implementing water supply, health, and personal hygiene strategies to address the issue.

During the meeting held on 21 December to discuss pre-planning aimed at preventing drinking water shortages in villages, the Union Minister said that the ministry had completed 41,524 rural water supply projects in 30,298 villages from the financial year 2012-2013 to 2022-2023, benefiting about 22 million rural residents.

The Union minister also outlined plans for the ongoing financial year, with the implementation of 1,195 rural water projects expected to benefit an additional 0.7 million people in 920 villages.

Furthermore, in addressing the challenge of water scarcity during the summer, the Union minister emphasized a comprehensive approach. Alongside immediate initiatives like distributing drinking water, the ministry is committed to undertaking shortterm and medium-term measures to address and resolve water scarcity issues.
