THE COVID-19 vaccine is the most important way so far to control the infection rate of the global pandemic, said Dr Than Naing Soe, Director of the Public Health Department of the Ministry of Health and Sports, at the meeting held on 22 July.

“The effectiveness of the vaccine is like we inject the spike protein of the virus into the human body. Some vaccine makes the thorns of virus get out of the body. Some try to weaken the virus, stop the virus reproduction and develop high resistance to the immune system,” he said.

“The spike of the virus comes out of the body. Although the virus will not reproduce anymore, it can affect the immune system gradually. Then, it will produce antibodies, and the immune cells recognize the virus,” he added.

The people must get the vaccines twice. Even if they are infected after two weeks of vaccination, the body would have an immune system that can fight against the virus.

“If the virus enters, the antibodies cover the virus, especially their spike. If the virus enters into the cells, it directly goes to the spikes. The spike protein combines with the ACE2 receptor of the eyes, nose and mouth, and then it leads to human’s cells. At that time, the antibodies cover the spike and so the virus cannot enter the cell. If so, they cannot affect anything,” he continued.

The antibodies destroy the virus and protect from severe illness and death.

Therefore, people should know the advantages of vaccines and get vaccinated against COVID-19, he urged.
