VACCINATION programmes are being stepped up as part of the COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control programme in Myanmar. The Ministry of Health and Sports says it plans to vaccinate the public against COVID-19 soon.

The vaccine will be given to people in the country aged 18 and over in priority groups, said officials.

“The vaccine can be given to weaken the virus. It is a type of medicine that is not harmful to humans. Up to stage 3 of the drug has been tested in several countries to determine its ability to protect against COVID-19 disease,” said Dr Khin Khin Gyi, Director of the Central Infectious Disease Control Division, Department of Public Health, Ministry of Health and Sports during an interview.

Sinopharm is a COVID-19 vaccine developed by China National Biotech Group Company Limited (CNBG). It has an average of 112 days of follow-up in those who received two doses 21 days apart, with a 79% effectiveness in preventing COVID-19 disease and its severity, according to the World Health Organization.

COVID-19 vaccination started in Myanmar on 27 January 2021.

More than 1.6 million people have been reportedly vaccinated, and donations have been made to ensure that 100% of the population is fully vaccinated.
