The UNESCO-listed Bawbawgyi Stupa in southwest of the ancient city of Sri Ksetra, Pyay Township, Bago Region, is being restored following damage caused by the Mandalay earthquake.

Cracks appeared around the stupa’s circular structure due to impacts of the severe earthquake, while small banyan trees growing on the monument were found to pose long-term risks to its stability, prompting urgent conservation work.

Restoration is being carried out without altering its original design, with efforts expected to be completed before the monsoon season to prevent further damage from rainwater entering the cracks. Nearby pagodas including Phayama Pagoda will also be inspected and repaired as necessary.

The Bawbawgyi Stupa, notable for its cylindrical base and banana bulb-shaped design, dates back over a thousand years to the Pyu era and is closely associated with historical accounts of King Duttabaung of the Sri Ksetra dynasty and Queen Panhtwar, making it one of the most prominent ancient monuments in Myanmar.
