Late Pro Tem President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, U Myint Swe, was born to U Kyee Maung and Daw Kyi in Mandalay on 24 June 1951. He attended the 15th Intake of the Defence Services Academy in 1969 and was appointed as a commissioned officer in 1973.

He served assigned duties at relevant regiments and units diligently. He concurrently served the duty of the Commander of No 11 Light Infantry Division and the Brig-Gen General Staff from 1998 to 2001. He also discharged duties of the Commander of South-East Command and the Yangon Command from 2001 to 2004. During the period from 2004 to 2006, he concurrently served duties of the Chief of Military Affairs Security and the Commander of Yangon Command. He also served as the Chief of No 5 Bureau of Special Operations of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army) from 2006 to 2011.

He discharged duties of the Chief Minister of the Yangon Region government in the first term of Hluttaw from 2011 to 2016, the First Vice-President of the President Office of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar in the second term of Hluttaw from 2016 to 2021 and the Pro Tem President from the State of Emergency in 2021 until his passing. As he served his duties with excellent performances for the interests of Tatmadaw, the State and the people day and night, he was deservedly awarded the General Service Medal, the People’s Militia Combating Medal, the State Peace and Development Council medal, the Mongyang/Methawaw medal, the Good Military Service medal, the Thingaha medal, the Thray Sithu title, the Thadoe Thiri Thudhamma title, and the Thadoe Maha Thray Sithu title. Moreover, he diligently chaired and co-chaired different committees formed for safeguarding and preserving nationality and religion in successive governments.

At the time of his passing, he was survived by his wife Daw Khin Thet Htay, his daughter Daw Khin Thet Htar Swe, and his son Captain Kyaw Phone Myint (retired). The State funeral for late Pro Tem President U Myint Swe will reportedly be held on 11 August 2025.
