MYANMAR has come a long way from the brink of civil war and economic collapse to the solid foundation to restart the engines of economic growth. The current economic situation is somewhat stable now. Balance of trade is on the right track and with the West and ASEAN, especially turning against us, the situation is significantly better than the same time a year ago.

DURING summers, local people of Kyaukpon Village in Sedoktara Township, Minbu District, Magway Region, encounter problems accessing drinking water. To ensure yearround supply of fresh drinking water, the Dagodaw charity group from Nyaungpinsauk Village, Pwintbyu Township sank a four-inch diameter tube-well in the village. The tube-well sinking was completed successfully with contributions of the local residents, said U Kyaw San, a member of the charity group.

THE on-duty team confiscated five kinds of things including eight suspected jade bracelets worth K10.5 million without official documents from luggage at the Yangon International Airport on 1 March, 225 cartons of Lactasoy (300 millimetres) and 100 cartons of Wai Wai instant vermicelli bag worth K8.6 million without official documents from three vehicles (estimated value of K57 million) which stopped on Yangon-Myawady Pyidaungsu highway road and 150 cartons of Lactasoy and 200 cartons of Lipvitan-D worth K4.35 million from a vehicle (estimated value of K30 million) at the Mayanchaung permanent checkpoint in Mon State on 2 March. The action was taken under Customs procedures.
