The Myanmar Government is giving serious priority, as a matter of national responsibility, to combating online scams and online gambling activities that pose threats worldwide. In order to prevent such operations from taking root within Myanmar, the authorities are actively cooperating not only with domestic organizations but also with neighbouring governments through coordinated efforts.

Joint security teams have been carrying out area clearance operations, searches and inspections in relevant areas to ensure that individuals involved in online scam and gambling activities are not based there and that such activities are not being conducted. During operations conducted yesterday morning, security forces reached a location about 6,800 metres south-east of Hseehsaw Village in Laihka Township, Shan State (South), where they arrested 18 suspects involved in online scam and gambling operations – 13 Chinese nationals and five Myanmar women. The authorities also seized two residential tents measuring 120 feet by 30 feet, one operational tent of the same size, one kitchen tent measuring 80 feet by 30 feet, two all-in-one computers, one medium-sized generator, two large power stations and 90 destroyed mobile phones of various types.

Security teams continued their security operations and later arrested an additional 12 Chinese male suspects involved in online scam and gambling activities at a location approximately 6,000 metres south-east of Hseehsaw Village.

Similarly, yesterday afternoon, security forces arrested another six Chinese male suspects involved in illegal online gambling activities near the Mongpan-Kengtawng road, about 12,000 metres south of Kengtawng in Mongpan Township, Shan State (South).

After the necessary investigations are completed, those arrested for involvement in online scams and gambling activities will face effective and severe action in accordance with existing laws. The seized operational equipment will also be dealt with in line with established procedures.

The report added that the State will continue actively cooperating with neighbouring countries, regional nations and international organizations in efforts to eradicate online scam and gambling activities and prevent such operations from being established within Myanmar.
