THE Forest Department and Wildlife Conservation Society Myanmar Programme signed 6 MoUs since 1993 to enhance measures to conserve wild elephants in Rakhine State.
Nature and Wildlife Conservation Division of Forest Department conducted conservation measures in Thandwe and Gwa Townships of Thandwe District by cooperating with the officials of Rakhine Yoma Elephant Sanctuary in 2014, according to U Htet Arkar Aung, head of Wildlife Conservation Society Myanmar Programme.
The WCS-Myanmar provides technical and financial assistance and assigns the local youths who are interested in conservation works as guards at elephant outposts to protect wild elephants.
The WCS-Myanmar also conducts public awareness programmes or provides materials to scare away the wild elephants for the people living in vicinity areas of Rakhine Yoma elephant camp with the funds of EU Partners Against Wildlife Crime by cooperating with Rakhine Coastal Conservation Association (RCA).
It helps the villagers to inform the officials about illegal wildlife trade and wild elephant poaching in Rakhine Yoma.
It also supports the activities to implement the Myanmar Elephant Conservation Action Plan (2018-2027) which was drafted in 2018.
