Union Election Commission Chairman U Than Soe received Mr Igor Borisov, a member of the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation, yesterday at the Bagan Hall of the Jasmine Nay Pyi Taw Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw.
During the meeting, the Russian Central Election Commission member expressed Russia’s belief that Myanmar can hold a successful election and conveyed his special gratitude for the invitation to observe the election.
The Union Election Commission chairman then stated that Myanmar and Russia have enjoyed 77 years of diplomatic relations since 1948 and expressed special gratitude to the government and people of the Russian Federation for the friendship between the leaders of the two countries, Russia’s continuous support, the systematic implementation of democratic standards through laws and regulations to hold free and fair elections, and the participation of international election observers.
The two sides discussed the status of international and local media access to news, cooperation between the two election commissions through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU), plans for election observation, and measures taken to ensure the successful conduct of the election, and exchanged views on future cooperation in a friendly and open manner, followed by an exchange of souvenirs.
The meeting was also attended by Union Election Commission Member U Myo Hlaing, and officials from the commission office.
