U Myint Kyaing, Union Minister for Immigration and Population, received Mr Filippo Grandi, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and his delegation in the ministry’s meeting hall in Nay Pyi Taw at 3.30 pm yesterday.
They openly exchanged views on matters related to the repatriation of displaced persons from Rakhine State. Discussions covered the signing of a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the ministry and UNDP-UNHCR, ongoing efforts to ensure the successful implementation of these initiatives, and coordination between the governments of Myanmar and Bangladesh.
They also discussed delays in the repatriation process caused by obstruction from terrorist within Rakhine State, as well as arrangements allowing UNHCR staff operating in the Buthidaung and Maungtaw areas to temporarily relocate to Sittway and Yangon for safety reasons, with a plan to return to their posts once the security situation stabilizes. The ministry and UNDP-UNHCR reaffirmed their joint commitment to continue working together to facilitate the repatriation process for displaced persons from Rakhine State.
Also present at the meeting were Deputy Minister U Htay Hlaing, Permanent Secretary U Min Hein, the director-general of the Department of Immigration and other officials.
