The opening ceremony of the South and Southeast Asian Media Network (SSAMN) Annual Meeting took place at the Shangri-La JEN Hotel in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China, yesterday.

Ms Zeng Yang, Member of the Party Standing Committee of Yunnan Province and Information Minister of the Yunnan Provincial Government, Myanmar Information Union Minister U Maung Maung Ohn-led delegation, and other representatives from China, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos and Sri Lanka attended the event.

After the ceremonial procedures, the leaders released the constructive outcomes of the 2025 South and Southeast Asian Media Network.

Speaking at the meeting, Union Minister U Maung Maung Ohn said the theme of the annual meeting, “Achieving Development through Mutual Learning and References,” is timely and highly relevant.

South and Southeast Asia are among the fastest-growing regions in the world today, leading in areas of economic growth, technological advancement and social development. Such achievements are the result of mutual learning, cultural exchanges and strong media cooperation between the countries.

He added that the ministry has already established various forms of cooperation with media across South Asia and Southeast Asia. Similarly, it has also been broadening its media cooperation with many countries. Especially with Chinese media organizations. Moreover, Myanmar signed a Letter of Intent to participate in the Mekong Look App project, together with other Mekong region countries.

He continued that Myanmar is a member of regional organizations such as ABU and AIBD, which are dedicated to advancing broadcasting and media development in the Asia-Pacific region. Through these organizations, the country actively joins media trainings, workshops, and technical courses both online and in person.

Last year, the country co-hosted the 4th China-Myanmar Twin City Media Forum with Yunnan Province. Training and technology, Media-driven cultural exchanges, such as co-productions of films, TV series, documentaries, news and program exchanges, should also be expanded, sharing each other’s cultural works, people of the two countries can expand their friendship.

Through the forum, mutual learning, innovative approaches, and responsible dissemination of information will not only benefit each country, but will also contribute significantly to peace, stability and sustainable development in the region and the world, he added.

During the roundtable discussion “hand in hand through border areas”, the representatives of China, Thailand, Pakistan, Cambodia and Vietnam participated in.

At noon, the Union minister met Wu Xu, executive secretary of the All-China Journalists Association.

They openly discussed comprehensive media cooperation, combating misinformation and disinformation with the true information, support in the media sector to ensure the successful holding of the election in Myanmar and further cooperation between the two media.

In the evening, China-Myanmar government officials, rescue team members, media and partner organizations attended the 2025 China-Myanmar Twin City Media Forum and talk shows.

The video clip features the rescue works conducted by Yunnan Province rescue and medical teams in quake-affected areas of Myanmar. The participants exchanged views on rescue works, rescue methods and the role of borderless language.

During the discussion titled “moving towards future joining hands among media”, the media-related representatives discussed the enhancement of media collaboration and improving the media sector using AI technology.

The Myanmar delegation, led by the Union minister, attended the opening ceremony of a variety show and market fair in 1903 Park in Kunming in the same evening.

During the ceremony, the Information Ministers of China, Myanmar and Cambodia inaugurated the China-Myanmar market fair and the China-Cambodia market fair. They enjoyed the entertainment programmes performed by Chinese, Myanmar and Cambodian artistes.

The Chinese, Myanmar and Cambodian delegates observed the products of different countries, booths of the Ministry of Cooperatives and Rural Development, the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, photos of tourist destinations and landscapes of Myanmar, and photos highlighting China-Myanmar cooperation.

Over 150 entrepreneurs from South and Southeast Asian countries participated in the market fair, showing their products, Yunnan-produced agricultural products, as well as the booth of Yunnan education.
