THE Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar has agreed to the appointment of Mr Tariq Karim as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.

Mr Tariq Karim was born on 9 April 1974. He holds an MPhil in Environmental Sciences and an MSc in Bio Sciences from Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, an MA in History from the University of the Punjab and completed a one-year Postgraduate Foreign Service Programme in Diplomatic Studies at the University of Oxford, the UK, with distinctions. He also studied the Russian language at Moscow State University.

From 2003 to 2021, Mr Tariq Karim held various diplomatic capacities from Third Secretary to Counsellor at the Embassies of Pakistan in Moscow, Russia, in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, in The Hague, the Netherlands, the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, India, Deputy Permanent Representative to the Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapon-OPCW and Pakistan’s D8 (Developing 8 Organization for Economic Cooperation) Commissioner. He also served as Assistant Director (United Nations and ECO/Central Asian Republics), Director (China, Japan & Korea), Director (Middle East & Africa) and Director General for Economic Diplomacy and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC & ED) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan.

He has been serving as the Consul-General of Pakistan in Chicago, the United States, since May 2021.

He is married.
