THE opening ceremony of the 14th Biennial Myanmar Conference on Anaesthesia and Intensive Care 2025 was held on 17 May at the Melia Hotel in Yangon under the theme: “Dealing with Anaesthesia Crisis: Empowering Knowledge and Sustainable Practice”.
Union Minister for Health Dr Thet Khaing Win attended the ceremony and delivered the opening speech. In his address, he highlighted Myanmar’s efforts to build a resilient healthcare system aligned with the nation’s healthcare framework.
The Union minister commended the dedicated efforts of healthcare specialists, including anaesthetists, surgeons, gynaecologists, and other medical personnel, during the challenging aftermath of the devastating earthquake on 28 March. Despite significant obstacles, over 240,000 major surgeries and 220,000 minor surgeries were successfully conducted in general hospitals nationwide in 2024.
He encouraged attendees to apply the knowledge and experiences gained from the conference to their work, ensuring secure and efficient healthcare services for the public. A welcome message video from Dr Carolina Haylock Loor, President of the World Federation of Societies of Anesthesiologists (WFSA), was then screened, followed by a welcome speech by the chairperson of the Myanmar Society of Anesthesiologists.
The ceremony concluded with a ribbon-cutting to inaugurate the event, after which the Union minister and officials toured the displays of posters, medicines, and equipment.
