The Sixth ASEAN-India Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture and Forestry (6th AIMMAF) was held online between the ASEAN Ministers of Agriculture and Forestry and the Minister of State for Agriculture Cooperation and Farmers’ Welfare of India on 21 October.
Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation Dr Aung Thu and Cambodian Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Mr Veng Sakhon co-chaired the meeting which could release a joint press statement for ensuring the unimpeded flow of safe and nutritious agricultural produce in the regon.
The meeting also exchanged views on the situation of COVID-19 pandemic and its unprecedented impacts on the lives of people and economies, including the disruption of the food supply chain in the region.
The Union Minister discussed the importance of laying down regional policies to avoid famine like the one experienced in 2017-2018 and awareness on possibility of famine resulted from the pandemic.
Participants also held talks on matters relating to the progress of cooperation between ASEAN and India on agriculture and forestry during 2016-2020 and medium-term procedures for agriculture and forestry which were adopted for 2021-2025.
The meeting decided reassignment of ASEAN-India Working Group on Agriculture and Forestry, holding the working group’s meeting annually, and organizing the ministerial meeting every two years.
The Sixth Meeting of ASEAN-India Ministers of Agriculture and Forestry approved a joint press statement, and agreed to hold its 7th edition meeting in 2022.
