A ceremony to commemorate the 16-day campaign to eradicate violence against women was held at the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement in Nay Pyi Taw.
The event was attended by Union Minister and Chairperson of the All-Myanmar Women’s Committee Dr Soe Win and his wife, deputy ministers and their wives, members of the Myanmar Women’s Committee, members of the National Committee on Prevention and Response to Sexual Violence in Conflict, chairpersons of the Nay Pyi Taw Women’s Committee, permanent secretaries, directors-general, and representatives from non-governmental women’s organizations.
In his speech, the Union Minister noted that the ‘16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence’ is an annual global campaign, also observed in Myanmar. He highlighted the country’s efforts to implement the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, commitments made at the World Conference on Women, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, and national policies promoting women’s development, rights, and the elimination of violence against women.
This year’s theme, ‘Let’s Unite to End Violence Against Women and Mark the 30th Anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action’, underscores the importance of collective action.
The campaign calls on government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and individuals to work together to combat violence against women and girls, ensure perpetrators are held accountable, and provide comprehensive support to victims, including legal protection, healthcare, and social services.
The ceremony also included the screening of a video on measures to eliminate violence against women and concluded successfully.
