Yacon became popular on internet this year and price has been higher compared to last year. The consumption of yacon has now developed. “Yacon has gained popularity on Facebook and TikTok this year, so the consumption has developed. Price has been high this year. ‘‘The number of yacon sellers have begun larger and so does the number of buyers,” said an official from Zaw Lwin Oo fruits wholesale trading centre in Naungtaya.

Yacon is mainly transported to Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon and Mandalay but Yangon is the biggest buyer.

Yacon has health benefits and it is especially helpful to patients with diabetes, kidney and heart disease. It is mainly grown in Taunggyi and Hopong townships.

“Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw and Yangon are major destinations and Yangon is the biggest buyer. It can be eaten raw after peeling. It is medicinal and good for diabetes, kidney and heart disease. Its season approximately begins from October to February,” he said.
