THE Navigation Department of Region 5, under the Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems, has issued a warning to ships travelling on the Ayeyawady River due to whirlpools forming in the first narrow stretch of the river since the second week of June.
With the Ayeyawady River currently experiencing high water levels, cargo and passenger vessels travelling between Mandalay and Bhamo, especially along the narrow stretches from Hsinbo to Myitkyina, are advised to exercise caution due to the presence of eddies.
These swirling currents have been reported since the second week of June, and authorities have issued warnings regarding them. In the first week of June, the department advised all vessels, including those travelling from Mandalay ports to Bhamo, to pay close attention to navigational signs for safe manoeuvring, but will temporarily stop installing them along the Ayeyawady River.
