A festival to mark New Year of 2118 Shan era was celebrated at Shankyaunggyi monastery in Taikkyi Township on 16 December, according to Sai Kyaw Htoo, chairman of the Shan Ethnic Literature and Traditional Culture Committee (Taikkyi Township).

The traditional Shan New Year festival is usually held for the entire month starting from the first waxing of Nattaw to the 14th waning of the month.

"This year is 2118 Shan era. The Shan New Year festival is usually held locally throughout the month of Nattaw. Shan ethnics living in Taikkyi, Hmawby, Hlegu and Mingaladon townships come together to celebrate the festival at Shankyaunggyi monastery in Taikkyi Township. There are 14 basic education schools teaching Shan literature in Taikkyi and Hmawby townships.

The Shan ethnic traditional dance and poetry competition of the Shan ethnic students were included this New Year's event," Sai Kyaw Htoo said.

The first waxing of Nattaw is Shan New Year Day. In ancient times, heroes, doyen literati, musicians and artistes were awarded, and ceremonies to give respect to senior citizens were held in the new year events while the festival went on with many revellers.
