UNION Minister for Labour U Myint Kyaing attended the Labour Ministers’ Meeting of Non-Aligned Movement members during the 110th International Labour Conference held yesterday via videoconference.

At the meeting, the chairperson of the Non-Aligned Movement Member States Minister for Labour and Social Protection of Azerbaijan Mr Sahil Babayev delivered opening remarks.

While addressing the meeting, Union Minister U Myint Kyaing said the State Administration Council has set the five-point roadmap and nine objectives in building a genuine, disciplined, multiparty democratic system, focusing on the economic development of the country through the tripartite cooperation among the government, employers, and employees.

To recover from the economic devastation caused by the COVID-19 crisis, the government is providing support for the development of SMEs to increase employment opportunities for citizens, for more domestic and foreign investment to develop technology and labour market and provide investment support.

The largest Myanmar citizen investment and foreign investment are in the industry, services, hotels and tourism industry, and the electricity sector, which have created many job opportunities, he said.

In addition to creating job opportunities for local workers, we are also working with the countries concerned to ensure the safe migration of Myanmar migrant workers abroad and their full access to rights and protections under the laws of their respective countries, he added.

A total of K585.472 million was provided as financial benefits for more than 4,028 pregnant women insured workers registered for social security during the COVID-19 outbreak, and K292.570 million was provided for more than 5,125 insured workers who were diagnosed with COVID-19 disease and who needed to be quarantined.

A total of 1,634,174 insured workers from factories, which were temporarily closed during the first and second waves of COVID-19, received a total of K70,829.756 million as social security benefits.

As a social protection programme, the Maternal and Child Cash Transfer Programme (MCCT) provides financial support to pregnant women and their children under the age of two and social pension programmes for the elderly aged 90 and over. The coverage age has been reduced to 85 years.

Myanmar will work for a genuine, disciplined, multiparty democracy, a union based on democracy and federalism, support local businesses, create jobs that will produce more of the country’s products, prioritize the interests of workers, and protect employers under the law, he said.
