THE committee on implementing recommendations on Rakhine State held its coordination meeting over the review report (draft) regarding implementation activities, at the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday afternoon.
Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr Win Myat Aye (also chairperson of the committee), Rakhine State Chief Minister U Nyi Pu (also joint chairperson of the committee) and other committee members attended the meeting.
The Union Minister said that during the three-year term of the committee, it had prepared a review report based on the status of implementation of the 88 recommendations of the Rakhine State Advisory Commission chaired by Mr Kofi Annan for the stability and long-term development of the Rakhine State.
The Secretary’s Office of the Recommendation Committee has prepared a review report (draft) in accordance with the results of the analysis, and the attendees discussed the report (draft).
The Union Minister said that the review report (draft) is based on the information published in the committee’s public reports issued every four months and the information from monthly reports submitted by the Rakhine State government and the relevant ministries.
He pointed out that the three crises that need to be addressed for stability and development in the Rakhine State are development crisis, human rights crisis and security crisis. He said that all relevant committees and officials has worked together to address those crises.
The Union Minister added that most of the recommendations are for a long-term period and progress has been made to some extent. But it is difficult to quantify the progress, according to the Union Minister, who said that indicators need to be developed to measure the progress.
Regarding the international pressure, Rakhine State Chief Minister U Nyi Pu, in his capacity as joint chairperson of the committee, said that the committee members need to be thoughtful in their speech and actions because their words and actions will have a great impact on the international perspective. He also highlighted the need to focus on Rakhine State issues to ease international pressure. Deputy Minister for State Counsellor Office U Khin Maung Tin, in his capacity as vice-chairperson of the committee, said that preparation of the review report is very important because the report will provide necessary information to respond to international pressure.
During the meeting, other committee members explained their relevant tasks and made suggestions for the report.
In his closing speech, the Union Minister called on the committee members to adhere to COVID-19 related guidelines in implementing recommendations on the Rakhine State.
