THE 12th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Management (AMMDM) and related activities were held in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam, from 23 to 25 October, with Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr Soe Win attending it alongside ASEAN disaster management ministers and ministers from partner countries – China, Japan, and Korea.

The Union minister attended a ceremony commemorating International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. Afterwards, he travelled to Bandar Seri Begawan and Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas Park, where he participated in a tree-planting event alongside fellow ministers attending the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Management.

At the ceremony, the host country’s Minister of Home Affairs delivered a welcome speech, and a congratulatory video message from the ASEAN Secretary-General for the 12th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Management was also played.

Following this, a ceremony was held to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The event included a documentary screening about the tsunami disaster, interviews with survivors, and a showcase of advancements in disaster management and preparedness implemented since the disaster.

Additionally, a congratulatory video from the UN’s disaster risk reduction office was played to mark International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction and the 12th ASEAN disaster management meeting. A group photo session was also conducted to commemorate the event.
