The Myanmar delegation, led by Union Minister for Electric Power U Nyan Tun, attended the Third Belt and Road Energy Ministerial Conference in Qingdao, Shandong Province, People’s Republic of China, on 23 and 24 October.
In his opening speech at the forum, Union Minister U Nyan Tun highlighted that it is evident the BREP member countries and their people have received increasing attention and concern. He noted that they are building an energy cooperation platform in the five years since the launch of the Belt and Road Energy Partnership (BREP). Myanmar strives to achieve full electricity access by 2030, emphasizing energy cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative to share progress and innovations in the international energy landscape. Myanmar will actively cooperate with BREP members in implementing the Belt and Road Green Energy Cooperation Action Plan (2024- 2029).
In the evening, the Myanmar delegation, led by the Union minister, met officials led by Mr Zhang Jianhua, Chairman of the China National Energy Administration (NEA), to discuss cooperation in the electricity and energy sectors between China and Myanmar.
Similarly, during the opening ceremony of the Smart Energy Sub-Forum held on the second day of the conference, the Myanmar delegation clarified its commitment to implementing the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) made in August 2021, by the decisions of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement. The delegation highlighted the numerous opportunities for building Green Growth Models and Energy Storage Systems (ESS) in ongoing renewable energy projects in Myanmar, inviting partner organizations to invest in efforts to make Myanmar greener through the use of green energy.
The Myanmar delegation also reportedly paid observation tours at the Huadin Qingdao Gas Turbine Engineering Project, the TELD EV Charging Network Centre in Qingdao, and the 800 kV DC Converter Substation in Yunnan Province.
