The newly formed Bar Council held the first meeting via videoconferencing yesterday morning since its election last month.

Union Attorney-General U Tun Tun Oo, in his capacity as the chairman of Bar Council, delivered an opening speech at the meeting.

He said the meeting was the first time of council after it was reformed in accordance with the new Bar Council Act approved at the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw on 10 June last year.

The new Bar Council is chaired by the Union Attorney-General, with the participation of two judges from the Supreme Court of the Union and the Deputy Attorney-General as the members, 11 elected advocates as vice-chairpersons, secretary and members.

Rules and regulations were adopted under the Act and the council held its election on 2 August this year. Over 3,300 advocates across the country elected 11 advocates out of 110 candidates in the election. The council’s bylaw has also defined the first election must be held within two months after the election.

The first meeting was taken part by the newly elected advocates from different regions and states through videoconferencing, and it selected Advocate U Mya Thein as the vice-chairperson and Advocate U Khin Maung Zaw as the secretary of the council.

The headquarters of Bar Council is located in the compound of Wunna Theikdi Stadium in Nay Pyi Taw, and its branch is in the lower block of Maha Bandoola Park Road in Yangon.

The Union Attorney-General said that the council is responsible for generating the lawyers on the subjects of bankruptcy, intellectual property, employment, corporate, tax and family affairs.

Participants at the meeting discussed capacity building of advocates, their ethics, issuing advocate licences and registration of lawyer associations.
