A man found guilty of raping 17-year-old several times at knifepoint and exploiting her earnings was sentenced to life in prison, according to the Myanmar Police Force.

Han Oo and his wife, Ma Zin Mar Htwe, manipulated their niece, a 17-yearold girl, to work at a clothing shop in Thailand during school holidays. They later had her recruited as a rubber tapper at a rubber plantation and exploited her earnings. Also, Han Oo repeatedly threatened her with a knife and raped her several times.

 Therefore, a case was filed against them at the Maungmakan police station under Sections 24/29 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Law and Section 376 (1) of the Penal Code.

On 8 March, the Dawei District Court sentenced suspect Han Oo to life in prison under Sections 24/29 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Law, along with 10 years with labour in prison. Suspect Ma Zin Mar Htwe was sentenced to 10 years with labour in prison under Section 24 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Law.
