VICE-PRESIDENT Nan Ni Ni Aye, who is also Chair of the National Tourism Development Central Committee, presided over the committee’s first coordination meeting in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.

Speaking at the meeting, the Vice-President said Myanmar’s strategic geographical location, rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, historical and archaeological sites, beaches and coastal areas, and the diverse traditions and customs of ethnic people constitute valuable tourism assets that attract international visitors. Therefore, the regional and state governments, together with tourism-related organizations, should formulate and implement practical tourism development plans based on the unique tourism resources of the respective areas.

The Destination Management Organization (DMO) plays a key role in the sustainable development of tourist destinations. She called for stronger DMO structures and effective destination management measures. She also stressed the need to improve air connectivity by expanding domestic flight routes to key tourist destinations and upgrading airport facilities through public-private partnerships.

She highlighted the importance of facilitating travel for international visitors by easing visa procedures where appropriate, enhancing travel safety and security, improving insurance services, and making payment systems more convenient. She said these improvements should be undertaken in accordance with existing laws, regulations and guidelines through coordination.

The Vice-President urged region and state governments to develop the tourism industry, cultural heritage sites, festivals and priority destinations, while improving infrastructure, marketing and service standards. She also called on private tourism operators to strengthen efforts to make Myanmar a competitive regional destination and encouraged all stakeholders to work together to accelerate the recovery of the country’s tourism industry.

Committee Vice-Chair Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr Soe Win and Committee Secretary Deputy Minister for Hotels, Tourism and Culture U Phyo Zaw Soe reported on the current situation of the tourism industry, development measures, completed and ongoing work plans.
