Myanma Railways has announced that arrangements are underway to systematically manage more than 100 railway crossings to ensure the safety and security of the high-speed DEMU train that will operate on the Yangon-Mawlamyine railway.
Officials from Myanma Railways and the Mon State government began working together on 8 June to implement these systematic improvements at over 100 railway crossings.
“We are closing illegal railway crossings. However, officially authorized crossings will remain open,” an official from Myanma Railways said.
These measures are intended to support the safe and secure operation of the Mawlamyine-Yangon DEMU train, which is scheduled to commence service in July, and to reduce the risk of railway accidents. According to reports, only 16 of the 157 railway crossings along the Yangon-Mawlamyine railway are officially authorized.
Plans are also underway to install security gates at essential unauthorized crossings for systematic management.
