The Mandalay Region government organized a donation ceremony for 45,738 monks and nuns from seven townships of the region at Maha Atulawaiyan (Atumashi) Monastery in Aungmyaythazan Township yesterday.
A total of 45 Sayadaws, led by the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Secretary, Presiding Sayadaw of Dhamma Thameikdi Monastery, Mandalay Region Chief Minister U Myo Aung and his wife, relevant officials and other invitees attended the event.
The congregation took the Five Precepts from Rector Sayadaw Dr Bhaddanta Kesara of the State Pariyatti Sasana University (Mandalay), and the region chief minister briefed on the donation.
They offered robes, rice, salt, cooking oil, onion and beans to Sayadaw and members of the Sangha, and shared merits gained. They also donated alms food to Sayadaws.
They donated K880 million worth of foodstuffs to 40,405 monks and novices and 5,333 nuns, totalling 45,783, who will observe Lent in seven townships of Mandalay: Aungmyaythazan, Chanayethazan, Mahaaungmyay, Chanmyathazi, Pyigyidagun, Patheingyi and Amarapura.
