A TOTAL of 1,954 buildings in Mandalay, Sagaing, and Nay Pyi Taw require major repairs and reinforcement to withstand future shocks following the Mandalay earthquake, according to the Myanmar Earthquake Committee.

The committee invites interested engineers to volunteer for systematic inspections of buildings damaged by the Mandalay earthquake and is organizing earthquake clinics in major cities, including Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon, Mandalay, and Sagaing, starting on 9 April.

The committee, with the help of volunteer engineers from the earthquake clinic, is conducting a first-stage assessment of the reusability of damaged buildings in Sagaing, Mandalay, and Nay Pyi Taw, having surveyed about 20,000 buildings across these regions to date.

According to these surveys, there are a total of 14,604 reusable buildings in the three earthquake-affected areas of Mandalay, Sagaing, and Nay Pyi Taw, representing 75 per cent of the total number of damaged buildings. Additionally, 3,000 buildings require detailed inspection, and 1,954 buildings need major renovation and earthquake retrofitting.
