YANGON’S COVID-19 prevention, control and treatment committee is preparing COVID-19 centres as soon as possible to accommodate more than 4,000 COVID-19 patients due to the resurgence of the COVID-19 positive cases in Yangon, according to the committee’s Vice-Chair, Professor Dr Zaw Wai Soe.
It is expected that there will be 300 or 400 COVID-19 new patients per day in Yangon. A patient needs to be under treatment at the hospital for 2 weeks in order to stop the infection to others. The professor said that there will be 4,200 patients in two weeks if there are 300 patients per day and that is why a hospital is needed for 4,200 patients in Yangon.
Currently, there are 1,140 COVID-19 patients in Phaunggyi COVID-19 treatment centre, 70 patients in Waibargi hospital, another 70 patients in South Okkalapa hospital, 600 patients in Yoma temporary hospital in Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) Township, 500 patients in Hline University and a total number of 2,380 COVID-19 patients are being accommodated so far.
Ayeyarwady Foundation is building a temporary hospital for 400 patients in Thuwunna Stadium. The committee is also preparing Yoma temporary hospital to accommodate up to 1,500 patients and Hline COVID-19 treatment centre to accommodate up to 1,000 patients.
According to the professor Dr Zaw Wai Soe, this arrangement will let the hospitals to operate in the kind of 300 patients in and 300 patients out and if necessary, there are other stadiums to use as temporary hospital.
The professor continued, “This is the containment strategy. If we let the patients go back home and get the treatment at home like in other countries, there may be more likely to infect other people and environment depending on the conditions of their homes. Although people in rich countries have a room for each person, not everyone can live like that in Myanmar. Also, the culture is that families live together here and the virus can be spread to the elderlies. If so, this will definitely give trouble to them.”
