MYANMAR’S Ministry of Health (MoH) and the People’s Republic of China are collaborating with the Myanmar Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Myanmar CDC) by sending scholars to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Jiangsu CDC) in Jiangsu Province of People’s Republic of China for training for a laboratory science course. The opening ceremony of the course was held on 5 January at the training hall of Jiangsu CDC in China and Deputy Minister Prof Dr Aye Tun from MoH delivered his speech via Video Conferencing.

The ceremony was attended by Director-General Dr Myint Myint Than of the Department of Public Health, Rector Dr Htay Htay Tin of the University of Medical Technology (Yangon), deputy directors-general of the Department of Public Health, and the Department of Medical Services under the Department of National Health Laboratory, deputy directors of the Ministry of Health, officials from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to Myanmar, and officials from the Chinese construction company that is in charge of the Myanmar Centres for Disease Control and Prevention project.

Mr Zhou Minghao, Deputy Director of the Jiangsu Health Commission and Director of the Jiangsu Provincial Bureau of Disease Control and Prevention from Jiangsu Province, People’s Republic of China, first gave a speech.

Furthermore, Deputy Minister Dr Aye Tun made a speech that the Myanmar CDC which is being carried out by the MoH with the assistance of China, will be completed in early 2024 and will play a major role in Myanmar’s disease prevention and control activities. He also expressed great gratitude for China’s assistance to Myanmar’s public health sector, including the Myanmar CDC and it is very beneficial for the trainees to be sent for training. He also added that the academic trainees who have been sent will play a very important role in Myanmar CDC if they return.

The person in charge of the Economic and Commercial Department of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Myanmar then made a speech and the Director in Chief of the Jiangsu CDC gave an explanation about the status of the training, and a representative of the trainees from Myanmar expressed their thanks.

The Myanmar CDC will have international-level laboratories, including a biosafety level 3 laboratory, and for the full operation of these laboratories, 35 laboratory experts from the MoH have been sent to the Jiangsu CDC for six months since November 2023.
