A delegation led by Ms Ma Theresa P Lazaro, Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair to Myanmar and Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines, paid a courtesy call on Acting President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and Chairman of the State Security and Peace Commission Senior General Min Aung Hlaing at the National Defence and Security Council Office in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday afternoon.
Also present at the meeting were Secretary of the Commission General Ye Win Oo, Commission Member and Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Than Swe, Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr Soe Win, the Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair to Myanmar and Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines, and officials from the Philippine Embassy to Myanmar.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed Myanmar’s efforts to optimize cooperation within ASEAN, the good diplomatic relations between Myanmar and the Philippines, the circumstances under which the country was compelled to assume responsibility following the massive voter fraud in the 2020 election and the attempt to seize power through unlawful means, recent political developments in Myanmar, and preparations to ensure free and fair elections, including the accuracy of voter lists.
They also discussed the successful holding of Phase I of the election on 28 December 2025, the conditions for conducting Phases II and III of the election in the remaining townships, the monitoring by international election observation teams during Phase I of the election, and the participation of the Philippines, which provided positive assessments of the election.
In addition, the two sides exchanged views on the conditions under which elections are being held in Myanmar to ensure that all citizens retain their democratic rights, as well as on political cooperation between Myanmar and the Philippines. They further held a frank and open discussion on promoting cooperation in the economic and trade sectors and on how Myanmar can continue to enhance cooperation within ASEAN.
After the meeting, the Acting President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and Chairman of the State Security and Peace Commission, together with the Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair to Myanmar and the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines, exchanged souvenirs before taking a group photo with the attendees.
