Myanmar authorities deported 85 foreigners involved in telecom fraud to their respective countries, and detained one more Ethiopian national following extra scrutiny. The government continues to combat online scams and criminal networks in cooperation with neighbouring countries and international organizations.

On 15 May, 78 Ethiopians and seven Liberians were deported via the Myanmar-Thailand Friendship Bridge II under humanitarian considerations and bilateral relations, in line with legal procedures. One more Ethiopian national was arrested during a subsequent investigation.

To ensure the deportation process was systematic and smooth, Kayin State Social Affairs Minister U Saw Tun Aung and officials held coordination meetings with relevant departments, verified lists and documents and filled in any missing information.

A formal deportation ceremony was held with the participation of officials from Myanmar and representatives from foreign embassies. Myanmar officials handed over the deportees along with necessary documentation.

Separately, on the same day, another Ethiopian national who entered illegally through the Myawady-Kyaukkat area was arrested. Authorities are now collecting personal details and records to arrange his swift repatriation in coordination with relevant departments.

From 30 January to 16 May 2025, Myanmar authorities apprehended a total of 9,071 foreign nationals who entered the country illegally. Of these, 8,412 were deported to their respective countries through Thailand. The remaining 659 are currently held under safe custody while preparations for their deportation are finalized.

The Myanmar government remains committed to thoroughly investigating and taking decisive action against illegal online fraud activities. Efforts to prevent and eliminate online gambling and financial scams in border areas will continue in close cooperation with neighbouring countries and international organisations, according to official reports.
