NLD donates K300 mln to national COVID committee

THE National League of Democracy contributed K300 million to the National-Level Committee on Prevention, Control and Treatment of COVID-19 yesterday.

Union Minister for Health and Sports Dr Myint Htwe received the cash donation presented by U Win Htein, the member of party’s leading body, and Dr Myo Nyunt, the member of Central Executive Committee of the party.

At the ceremony, U Win Htein explained the donation. Union Minister Dr Myint Htwe, in his capacity as the Secretary (2) of the committee, expressed thanks for the cash contribution and requested for the participation of the elected Hluttaw representatives from NLD in the fight against COVID-19 as the ministry is cooperating with relevant ministries and organizations in health awareness campaigns for the public and immediate recovery in economic, education and social sectors after effective containment measures against the pandemic.

302 Myanmar seamen arrive back home by relief flights

ONE hundred and sixty-three Myanmar seamen stranded in Viet Nam due to the suspension of international flights returned home yesterday evening by a chartered flight of Myanmar Airways International, organized by the Myanmar Embassy in Hanoi, the Myanmar Seamen’s Federation and respective shipping companies.

Another group of 139 Myanmar seamen who were stranded in South Africa and Brazil also arrived back home in the same evening by an MAI relief flight organized by Myanmar embassies in Pretoria, Brasilia and Riyadh through Dubai of the United Arab Emirates.

The Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population, the Ministry of Health and Sports and the Yangon Region government arranged 7-day quarantine at specific places or designated hotels, followed by the 7-day home quarantine.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is coordinating with the relevant ministries, Myanmar embassies from respective countries, shipping companies and seamen organizations to bring back the Myanmar citizens and seamen in accordance with the instructions from National-Level Central Committee on Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Election results to be announced four times each day

THE 2020 General Election was successfully organized on 8 November and the Union Election Commission (UEC) has been announcing the list of elected Hluttaw representatives since 9 November.

Election announcements were previously made three times a day at 12 pm, 4 pm and 8 pm but they are increased to four times a day, with the addition of a 9 am announcement, starting from 11 November, said U Khin Maung Oo, DirectorGeneral of the UEC office.

The Director-General said they are increasing the announcement times to ensure faster and more comprehen-sive dissemination of information.

The various election sub-commissions across the states and regions continuously update results to the UEC who announce it on television, radio, newspapers, the UEC’s website and Facebook page after careful scrutiny.

“It’s important for the information the UEC is releasing to be accurate and correct,” said U Khin Maung Oo. “We gather the results from polling stations at the township level or at the district level for Amyotha Hluttaw seats. Then we compile them at the state or regional level and analyze them before distribution. The state and regional subcommissions are allowed to announce their results, and they forward them to the UEC simultaneously.”

VP U Henry Van Thio opens new church hall in Haka

A new hall at the United Pentecostal Church (UPC) in Haka, Chin State was inaugurated with Vice President U Henry Van Thio yesterday morning.

Rev Dr Ral Bual gave the opening prayers and the Vice President cut the ceremonial ribbons to the new hall with Chin State Chief Minister U Salai Lian Luai and State Secu-rity and Border Affairs Minister Colonel Han Win Aung.

The Vice President delivered a gratitude speech and UPC Chair Rev Van Tiam hand-ed over certificates of honour to Colonel Han Win Aung and the construction engineer.

The new VP Henry Van Thio hall was constructed with a budget of K40million allocated by the Chin State Development Administration office in 2019-2020FY. Construction began in July and completed near the end of October. The hall is two-storey and measures 65 by 30 feet and is 21 feet high.

China donates COVID-19 medical equipment to MoHS

The donation ceremony of 240,000 sets of personal protective equipment from the People’s Republic of China to be used in the COVID-19 protective activities in Myanmar was held through videoconferencing yesterday evening.

At the ceremony, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Myanmar Mr Chen Hai said Myanmar and China are cooperating each other with friendliness in dealing with COVID-19 pandemic. He added that The Ministry of Health and Sports is doing its best to prevent and control the second wave of COVID-19 infection and that China will continue to support the COVID-19 prevention and control work in Myanmar in a united manner.

During the COVID-19 crisis in Myanmar, the Chinese central government, local government, companies and civil society organizations provided medicines and medical equipment worth of over $6.8 million, and medical teams visited three times to share their experience.

Union Minister Dr Myint Htwe expressed words of thanks for the support to the COVID-19 prevention and control work with the provision of medical equipment; for sending medical experts to share experiences and provide advice on COVID-19 disease prevention and control. The Union Minister extended his thanks for China’s support for the speedy establishment of the Myanmar Centre for Disease Control.

The centre aims to be able to carry out more effective prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable diseases, expend disease prevention and control capacity building activities, conduct research in collaboration with China, extensive cooperation between experts of the two countries. It will be able to carry out more advanced laboratory work and will be of great benefit to the people of Myanmar.

Afterwards, the Ambassador handed over the 240,000 PPE donation to Director-General for the Medical Research Department Dr Zaw Than Tun and received the certificate of honour.

MoALI holds meeting with FAO for agricultural development in Myanmar

Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation Dr Aung Thu attended a co-operation meeting with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations for the development of Myanmar’s agricultural sector.

The meeting discussed food security under the Country Programme Framework (CPF) (2017-2022); Nutrition and food safety; Land and water resource management; Climate change and disaster relief programmes; Issues related to the priorities of the Agricultural Development Strategy; Food security; Development of nutrition and diversified crop production; Increased crop consumption of nutritious and low-consumption vegetables in Myanmar; Issues related to the promotion of hunger eradication; Issues related to climate change and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the agricultural sector; Irrigation sector development and climate-friendly agriculture development; Livelihood and social rehabilitation, and implementation of the Agriculture Action Plan for Disaster Risk Reduction (AAPDRR).

The meeting was also attended by the Permanent Secretary, the Directors-General, Country Representative of FAO in Myanmar Ms Xiaojie Fan and officials.

UEC chairman receives Japanese special envoy to Myanmar

Union Election Commission Chairman U Hla Thein received Mr Yohei Sasakawa, Special Envoy of the Government of Japan for National Reconciliation in Myanmar and Chairman of the Nippon Foundation and party at the former’s office in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.

At the meeting, they discussed the successful holding of the 2020 General Election on 8 November in line with the five sets of norm for the elections, plans for the areas with no-elections, preventive measures for the voters against COVID-19 infection, plans for local and international observers for ensuring a free and fair election and assistance of Japanese government for the elections.

IPRD releases photo book on public development works of govt

The Information and Public Relations Department under the Ministry of Information has introduced its photo book on public development works of the government during the period 2016-2020.

Union Minister Dr Pe Myint delivered a speech at the launching ceremony of the 400-pages book printed with 995 photos for 10 sectors in politics, foreign affairs and international cooperation, economy, religious affairs and culture, social, border areas and national races development, education, health, Myanmar literature development and raising public knowledge, transport and communications, and electricity and related sectors.

The Union Minister said that his office had published 17 books in August on the works of the First 100 Days of Government, the four series of annual record books, speeches of government leaders and their official trips from 2016.

He added that the IPRD created this latest book which reflects the quote ‘A picture is worth a thousand words’ as it covers public development works from 2016 to 2020 in the presentation of photos and captions.

The Union Minister added that the MoI is preparing for publishing one more photo book on the works of region/state governments at the end of February or early March next year.

The Union Minister then presented the copies of photo books to Permanent Secretary U Tin Win Aung from Pyithu Hluttaw Office for the legislative pillar; Permanent Secretary U Tun Ohn from the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture for the administrative pillar; Deputy Director-General U Nyo Tun from the Office of Supreme Court of the Union for the judicial pillar.

Deputy Minister U Aung Hla Tun handed over the copies of books to Lt-Col Aung Ko Thwin, the secretary of work committee from Tatmadaw True News Information Team, Director Daw Saw Nan Nwe from the Department of National Archives and Director Daw Mya Oo from the National Library.

On behalf of the attendees, Permanent Secretary U Tun Tun Naing expressed his appreciation on publishing the photo book that illustrates both visible and invisible success of the government in public development works, as well as its challenges and struggles.

MoHS organizes virtual meeting with volunteers, social organizations over COVID-19 response efforts

The Ministry of Health and Sports yesterday morning organized a virtual meeting with volunteer groups, social organizations and civil society organizations involved in COVID-19 response efforts. During the virtual meeting, Union Minister for Health and Sports Dr Myint Htwe highlighted significant roles of enthusiastic volunteers in COVID-19 response efforts.

The Union Minister said that many organizations are helping the ministry control the spread of the COVID-19 disease in Yangon Region, and a tripartite group comprising of the Ministry of Health and Sports, the Yangon Region government and the General Administration Department should be formed in order to make COVID-19 response efforts effective.

The Union Minister said that the ministry is striving to get and provide accurate and up-to-date information so that efficient decisions can be made rapidly in trying to control the pandemic.

He said that the COVID-19 pandemic could affect not only the health sector but also the social sector, economy and education, so people need to adhere to the COVID-19 preventive guidelines strictly. He called on social organizations to constantly review their works in order to make their efforts as effective as possible. He also urged the organizations involved in the COVID-19 response efforts to submit their activity reports to the ministry so that it can publish a book.

During the virtual meeting, the participants discussed various topics such as volunteer works at quarantine centres, COVID-19 treatment centres and hospitals; installation of oxygen systems in Yangon General Hospital; donating food and other necessary things to the centres and the hospitals, and COVID-19 surveillance at highway bus stations.

Deputy Minister Dr Mya Lay Sein said that the ministry would provide more N95-masks and personal protective equipment (PPE) to volunteers. She added that the ministry is providing COVID-19 tests for volunteers by using Rapid Antigen Test Kits.

Permanent Secretary Dr Thet Khaing Win said that the ministry will take care of the matters that it can do and will submit the issues that the ministry cannot do to the National-Level Central Committee on Prevention, Control and Treatment of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The Union Minister said that the support given by the charity organizations would benefit not only COVID-19 treatment but also long-term healthcare systems.

The Union Minister concluded that the ministry will coordinate with relevant organizations in order to regularly hold virtual meetings with volunteers, social organizations and charity organizations.

Advance voting for 2020 General Election begins in Nay Pyi Taw

ADVANCE voters, in compliance with COVID-19 preventive guidelines, cast their ballots for 2020 General Election at the respective ward/ village-tract election sub-commission offices in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.

The advance voters included those outside their constituencies, civil service employees performing duties outside their constituencies, those cannot come to the polling stations on the Election Day and elderly persons aged 60 and above.

They voted at the respective ward/village-tract election sub-commissions in the townships of Zabuthiri, Pobbathiri, Dekkhinathiri, Ottarathiri, Zeyathiri, Tatkon, Pyinmana and Lewe.

Election officials, taking body temperature, providing hand sanitizer and face masks, conducted voting processes in line with COVID-19 preventive guidelines.

The election sub-commissions have managed homebased methods of voting for the elderly persons aged 60 and above from 29 October to 5 November.
