THE support and understanding of ASEAN countries are important for the political and economic development of Myanmar, said Union Minister for Investment and Foreign Economic Relations during the ASEAN Economic Ministers’ Special Meeting held in Indonesia on 17 and 18 May.
Similarly, the Union Minister said the delays in the economy of world countries including the unexpected Russia-Ukraine conflict have a large impact on the economic sectors of ASEAN countries while making efforts to revive the ASEAN economy in the post COVID period. Myanmar also faced such economic impacts as member countries and the government arranges proper measures for the political challenges and economy. The government also make preparations to hold elections in 2023 according to the Constitution. Therefore, the ASEAN countries should understand the situation in Myanmar and provides support. Myanmar is working in the economic pillar of ASEAN and also in regional economic integration.
The ministers at the special meeting exchanged views on initial works of ASEAN projects, ASEAN economic integration, recovery plans for the economy in the post-COVID-19 period and other economic-related matters.
The Union minister met Indonesian Trade Minister Mr Muhammad Lutfi and discussed the ease in the export sector of Indonesia for the normal import of palm oil from Indonesia to Myanmar, collaboration in regional inclusive economic cooperation and agricultural product export of Myanmar.
The Union minister also met Cambodian Commerce Minister Mr Pan Sorasak and Thai Commerce Vice-Minister Mr Samsem Samalapa.
The Economic Ministers of ASEAN countries, ASEAN superior officials, representatives and ASEAN Secretary-General joined the ASEAN Economic Ministers’ Special Meeting.
