JOINT Monitoring Committee (JMC) on the Memorandum of Understanding for purchase of black gram and pigeon peas under the Government-to-Government pact between Myanmar and India virtually held a meeting on 21 January 2022 concerning trade policy and development.

Director-General U Myint Thura of the Trade Department of the Ministry of Commerce and Mr Kamkhenthang Guite, economic adviser to the Consumer Affairs Department of the Indian Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution led the meeting.

Myanmar can export 250,000 tonnes of black gram (urad) and 100,000 tonnes of pigeon pea under the G-to-G pact during the April-March period in the 2021- 2022 financial year. So far, the export volume has surpassed the set quota. Additionally, India extended relaxations of conditions regarding clearance consignment until 31 March 2022. Therefore, Myanmar traders and Indian importers will use this opportunity effectively. The bilateral negotiation focused on matters regarding the trade sector and its progress.

Later, they agreed on the criteria, standards and norms of the bean trade for the traders and governmental departments, according to an MoU between the 2022-2023 financial year and the 2025-2026FY.

The officials from the Myanmar Customs Department, Agriculture Department, Marine Administration Department, Myanma Port Authority, Myanmar Pulses, Beans and Sesame Seeds Merchants Association, India’s Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, India’s Embassy to Myanmar and related entities attended the videoconference.
