UNION Minister for Transport and Communications Admiral Tin Aung San attended the 19th ASEAN-Japan Transport Ministerial Meeting, 12th ASEAN- Korea Transport Ministers’ Meeting and special meetings for ASEAN-Dialogue partners and development partners by videoconferencing system yesterday.

The 19th ASEAN-Japan Transport Ministers’ Meeting was held in the morning and Transport Ministers from Cambodia and Japan gave opening remarks.

Then, the implementation of joint transport projects between ASEAN and Japan and infrastructure and human resource development were discussed.

The Union Minister briefed on the ongoing cooperation between ASEAN and Japan, Japan’s assistance in setting standards for transportation and storage to prevent food spoilage, and Japan-Myanmar transport cooperation under the bilateral programme on the promotion of ICT in road safety.

Next, Transport Ministers exchanged views on the next steps to be taken.

At the 12th ASEAN-Korea Transport Ministers’ Meeting, the two sides exchanged views on the implementation of the ASEAN-Korea Transport Cooperation Roadmap (2021- 2025). The Union Minister discussed cooperation between Korea and ASEAN member countries for the development of the transport sector.

The Union Minister alsodiscussed the final ratification of the ASEAN-Korea Aviation Agreement, which is being negotiated by Myanmar, to enhance aviation links.

In the afternoon, the Union Minister attended a special meeting of ASEAN Dialogue partners and development partners.

At the meeting, the Ministers of the member countries discussed the sustainable development of the transport sector in each country for the sustainable development of the ASEAN transport sector during the post-COVID-19 pe¬riod.

The Union Minister called for the upgrading of railways in line with the priorities of the National Transport Mas¬ter Plan drawn up with the assistance of Japan for the long-term and sustainable development of Myanmar’s transport sector.

Discussions were also held on the construction of ports, airport upgrade and improving waterways.

Next, the Union Minister said that public transport is important for environmen¬tal conservation and aims to reduce the socio-economic impact of road accidents on the people and carbondioxide emission.

The government is plan¬ning to provide electric trains in cities and the use of electric cars, the Union Minister said. Preparations are under¬way to increase the use of pub¬lic transport systems instead of private vehicles, the Union Minister added.
