A total of 949,441 students attended classes at 3,326 basic education and other schools across Yangon Region as the 2026-2027 academic year commenced on 1 June, with an attendance rate of 80.83 percent, according to the source.
Yesterday, 949,441 students started their school days at 2,717 basic education schools, 378 private schools and 231 monastic schools in Yangon Region, and school enrolment activities also continued.
More than one million students attended schools during the previous academic year, while the target for the current year is 1,174,666 students. Arrangements are being made to increase enrolment to 1.2 million students across Yangon Region during this academic year.
“During this academic year, 3,326 schools, including basic education, monastic and private schools, have opened. More than 900,000 students who enrolled during the school enrolment period began attending classes. With enrolment continuing, we expect the number of students to exceed the target of 1.1 million and reach 1.2 million. The government’s 100-day project includes a special Placement Test for students from Grade 1 to Grade 9 who have been out of school, and the tests will begin on 15 June in respective townships, enabling eligible students to continue their education in line with government guidelines. We also thank the Head of State, the Union Education Minister and responsible persons for their efforts in shaping education, which provides five essential skills and the emergence of smart youths who are happy at their learning in accordance with the motto “Let’s ensure education sector for the development of the Nation” said U Min Oo, deputy director (Education) of the Yangon Region Education Office.
The Ministry of Education is implementing measures to ensure that all school-age children have access to education and do not lose educational opportunities. As part of the special Placement Test, students who previously studied under the national curriculum at basic education schools and those who attended private schools following international curricula will be able to continue their education. Students who pass the entrance exam from the third week of June will be allowed to advance to the next grade level and enrol at schools of their choice.
“At our school, Grades 8 to 12 are taught in the morning, while KG to Grade 7 classes are in the afternoon. On the school’s first day, 2,555 students attended classes, representing an attendance rate of 99.33 per cent. Last academic year, there were five outstanding students (Luyaychun), and they are on the excursions arranged by the government. In the 2026-2027 academic year, we also cooperate with the parents as per the motto “Better Education for Children through Parent-Teacher Cooperation.” The participation of our outstanding students in competitions hosted by ASEAN and other countries is a sign of the benefits of cooperation between teachers and parents. In 2025, G10 student Ma Eaint Thu Thu Khin, representing the country, grabbed the chance to sail on a Russian nuclear icebreaker. Such action is such a proud for the country and school. This year, a student takes a test to join such an activity. Our school accepts school enrolment so far. The Placement Test is a special chance for the students who are far from education, and we urged them to apply forms and sit for the exam, and attend the basic education schools,” said Dr Sanda Mya Nyein, headmistress of No 1 BEHS Dagon.
