THE Department of Archaeology and National Museum (Bagan Branch) has announced that cleaning activities are being carried out to enhance the physical appearance of ancient religious buildings in the Bagan World Heritage Zone.
In order to better appreciate the beauty of the Bagan World Heritage Zone and ensure the sustainability of its heritage buildings, the department has launched a cleaning work to improve views of the ancient religious structures so that they can be admired from a distance.
In this regard, the ancient temple buildings cleaning team of the Cultural Site Security Section, has already carried out cleaning work on ancient buildings No 1205, No 1206, No 1208, No 1209, and No 1228 as part of ongoing cleaning and beautification efforts.
The roots of thorny trees and other vegetation growing on ancient buildings in the Bagan World Heritage Zone have caused cracks in the structures and allowed rainwater to seep in, damaging plasterwork and interior wall paintings.
To prevent such damage and ensure long-term sustainability, staff and experts from the Department of Archaeology and National Museum (Bagan Branch) have systematically removed trees growing on ancient buildings No 1668 and No 1666 using chemical treatments.
