FRIENDSHIP associations from Myanmar and Laos have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Nay Pyi Taw as an initial step towards strengthening bilateral cooperation. The MoU was signed on 27 February at the Jasmine Hotel by U Win Maung and Chanthavong Seneamatmontry, chairmen of their respective associations, following discussions based on earlier talks held in Vientiane.

Both sides reviewed progress of cooperation in electricity distribution, the exchange of Buddhist teaching staff, trade facilitation, and the issue of double taxation on Lao transit goods. They pledged mutual support in addressing each country’s development needs.

The Lao side also raised plans for power transmission links, the provision of cables with Chinese support, and a proposed friendly football match in Tachilek.

On the same day, Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Than Swe received the Lao delegation in Nay Pyi Taw. Discussions covered enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, energy, religious affairs, culture, tourism and labour, as well as promoting people-to-people ties, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
