THE ceremony to mark World Children’s Day and the 36th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child was held yesterday afternoon at the combined meeting hall of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement in Nay Pyi Taw.

The event was attended by Union Minister Dr Soe Win, Chair of the National Committee on the Rights of the Child, along with deputy ministers who are committee members, the Chair of the Nay Pyi Taw Committee on the Rights of the Child, a member of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission, the permanent secretary, departmental officials, members of child rights committees and representatives from international non-governmental organizations.

At the ceremony, the Union Minister highlighted that the 44th United Nations General Assembly adopted the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child on 20 November 1989 to ensure the protection and promotion of children’s rights worldwide. He noted that 20 November has been designated as World Children’s Day by the United Nations and has been observed for 36 years, adding that the global theme set by the United Nations for this year was “Listen to Children: My Day, My Rights”. He urged all relevant sectors to take into account the ideas, wishes and needs of children when implementing programmes for them, and to continue collaborative efforts to ensure that every child fully enjoys their rights, develops a bright future and grows into adulthood in a peaceful and happy environment.

A documentary video on the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child was then screened, followed by cultural performances by children. The Union Minister presented commemorative gifts and honorary cash awards to the participating children.
