A total of 256 Chinese nationals, arrested in Muse Township for illegally entering Myanmar and engaging in online scam operations have been deported to China, according to official sources.
The deportation followed a bilateral meeting on 26 July 2025, between Myanmar’s Deputy Police Chief Police Maj-Gen Aung Naing Thu and a Chinese delegation led by Mr Jiang Guoli of China’s Ministry of Public Security. The meeting, held at the Yeste Hotel in Mangshi, Yunnan Province was the third round of Myanmar-China cooperation to combat online fraud in Muse.
During discussions, both sides reviewed prior joint crackdowns: one in 2024 and another earlier in 2025, and confirmed that similar operations had also taken place in Myawady, Kayin State. So far, a total of 9,299 foreign nationals involved in online fraud have been identified and investigated in Myanmar, the meeting noted.
The latest operation took place between 28 and 30 July, with collaboration among Myanmar police, Tatmadaw, and Chinese authorities. The joint task force uncovered 256 Chinese nationals operating illegally in Muse, northern Shan State. Authorities also seized 15 buildings used in scam operations, 30 desktop computers, seven laptops, 311 assorted mobile phones, and 14 Wi-Fi routers.
On the morning of 31 July, the arrestees were formally handed over to Chinese officials at the Mang Wein border checkpoint. The transfer was carried out under the framework of bilateral agreements on law enforcement cooperation and mutual understanding between the two nations.
