Chairman of the National Disaster Management Committee, Vice-Chairman of the State Administration Council, Deputy Prime Minister, Vice-Senior General Soe Win, accompanied by Union ministers and the Nay Pyi Taw Council Chairman, yesterday afternoon inspected repairs of Ottarathiri Dam, the office circular road of the Ministry of Labour and retaining walls damaged by the Mandalay earthquake in Nay Pyi Taw.

At Ottarathiri Dam located on Kyaukoh Creek in Ottarathiri Township, the Vice-Senior General heard reports on water inlet channels to the dam, conducting geological survey and soil test to repair the embankment, leakage of the conduit of the dam, and repairs of the soil-filled embankment by Union Minister U Min Naung and officials. The Vice-Senior General asked what he wanted to know and gave necessary instructions.

The Vice-Senior General inspected the removal of the damaged building inside the dam and the installation of the valve at the emergency spillway as a diversion channel.

Concerning repairing the dam, efforts are being made to build a reserved spillway channel, dig a 1,350 feet route of the water inlet channel heading to Chaungmagyi Dam, place concrete on the low-laying area of the main spillway, remove water and silt between the temporary dyke and the original embankment, and construct a ring bund to protect the tower against the inflow of water. Moreover, the concrete tower was demolished to carry out cleansing tasks, including removing the valves of the sluice gate, permanently closing the conduit damaged by the earthquake, filling soil on the eastern part of the embankment with banquette to ensure long-term strengthening, and removing the soil from the landslide areas downstream of the dam. In addition, the embankment was refilled with soil in its original state with the construction of a concrete valve with 6 feet by 8 feet in size at the diversion channel. The conduit was drilled to have a hole to fill with concrete into the concrete pipe, while a socket is being made to be installed to block the concrete pipe, and the design is being formulated swiftly to install the valve in the diversion channel.

Ottarathiri Dam is of earthen embankment, covering 1,500 acres of watershed. Its embankment is 60 feet in height and 1,120 feet in length. It was built in the 2008-2009 financial year to supply sufficient drinking water to dwellers in Ottarathiri Township. Now, the dam is 17 years.

The Vice-Senior General and party arrived at the Ministry of Labour where Union Ministers U Chit Swe and U Myo Thant reported on conducting the soil test for reconstruction of the office building and the office circular road damaged by the earthquake, placing an earthen road with 12 feet in width in the place of the damaged concrete facility, construction of new gravel-filled retaining walls with reinforced concrete and bored piles, building of a temporary water outlet channel and other plans. The Vice-Senior General coordinated with officials to fulfil the needs.

The Vice-Senior General inspected preparations to drive bored piles for the construction of the RC retaining walls, and the functioning of the office works at the 40 feet by 40 feet and 40 feet by 60 feet prefabricated offices in the office compound and gave necessary instructions.
