AN inspection team, led by Members of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission U Kyaw Soe and U Than Win, inspected the Pyapon Police Lock-up and the Pyapon Prison in Pyapon Township, Ayeyawady Region, yesterday under Sections 43 and 44 of the Commission Law.
At the Pyapon Police Lockup, the MNHRC team inspected the conditions of detainees during the remand period, any torture that occurred during the investigation and whether there were opportunities to meet with family members, as well as the provision of food and drinking water, the handling of sewage, and the overall cleanliness of the facilities.
They checked whether prisoners accessed their fundamental rights, including an appropriate food supply, access to healthcare, and the provision of sufficient purified water. Furthermore, the team enquired whether prisoners had received items issued by the prison and items sent by their families and whether they were permitted family visits. Additionally, the team evaluated the conditions of physical activities, the right to freedom of religion, access to education and vocational training, and whether there were instances of human rights violations and torture by prison officials and fellow prisoners. MNHRC also donated knowledge books for the benefit of prisoners.
Afterwards, the inspection team looked over various facilities within the prison, including dormitories, the prison clinic, the library, the kitchen, the food warehouse, water purifiers, and water sanitation systems of the Pyapon Prison.
The inspection team will send its findings and recommendations to the relevant department for necessary actions under the MNHRC law.
