Union Minister for Home Affairs Lt-Gen Tun Tun Naung attended the 79th anniversary of Myanmar Fire Brigade Day held in Yangon yesterday.
All participants at the ceremony observed a one-minute silence as condolence for demise of individuals in the Mandalay earthquake.
Speaking at the event, the Union minister said between 2015 and 2024, approximately 18,000 fire incidents occurred across Myanmar, resulting in estimated loss of over K192 billion. Fire safety efforts will be stronger with the active participation and cooperation of the public. Throughout generations, the Department of Fire Services has bravely carried out fire suppression and rescue operations for the benefit of the nation and its people sacrificing their lives in the process.
The Mandalay earthquake that occurred on 28 March 2025 caused huge damage and the rescue teams of the department also conducted rescue operations together with regional partner countries, international rescue and emergency rescue teams to save 653 survivors and 789 deceased individuals.
The Fire Brigade must be strengthened through manpower, equipment, and technology to transform both in form and essence and effectively meet future challenges.
This remarkable achievement reflects the Myanmar Fire Services Department’s ability to operate at an international standard, earning the respect and commendation of the international search and rescue community.
Then, the Union minister presented awards to veteran singer U Tun Shwe, two over-90-year-old member of the regular firefighter unit, and the auxiliary fire brigade unit who are still serving duties and two members of the auxiliary camp who won medals.
The regional chief minister awarded the outstanding members.
The Union Minister and the Chief Minister of the region cordially greeted guests and families.
The Union minister and party viewed the demonstration using the modern fire extinguishers and search and rescue equipment displayed at the event.
