STATE Administration Council Member Deputy Prime Minister Union Minister for Defence General Maung Maung Aye, who is also Chairman of the Buildings Restoration, Utilization, and New Buildings Construction Supervision Committee, presided over the first coordination meeting of the committee in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.

First, the Union minister highlighted the formation of a committee to restore, utilize and construct new buildings that can stand the earthquake after the Mandalay earthquake that struck on 28 March. He then mentioned the formation of 18 level-1 inspection teams, 11 level-2 inspection teams and 12 special task forces to examine the quake-affected state-owned buildings, staff housing and special buildings, and the experts inspected the buildings with the colour-coded system (red, orange and blue).

He added that the buildings should be repaired and constructed to withstand earthquakes with a magnitude of up to 8.0 on the Richter scale. Currently, the committees are organized in the quake-affected Nay Pyi Taw Council Area, Sagaing Region, Bago Region, Magway Region, Mandalay Region and Shan State.

Moreover, six Committees for the Safety Inspection of Earthquake-Damaged Buildings are organized in Nay Pyi Taw and six regions and states. He also instructed officials to follow the procedures and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) in repairing the quake-affected buildings, roads and bridges, and to follow the law, rules and instructions and SOP for the MSMEs and buildings in industrial zones in Nay Pyi Taw, states and regions.

He continued that in repairing the office buildings, the companies of origin will be assigned, or the companies that are currently operating in construction processes of relevant ministries and companies that are recommended by three engineering groups will be assigned. The repairs for staff housing will be conducted by the Nay Pyi Taw Development Committee and the governments of relevant regions and states.

He then talked about the need to make budget estimates and approval-seeking processes to prevent misuse of the budget.
