THE government has continued its efforts to crack down on illegal activities by foreign nationals who are entering Myanmar, particularly in the border regions and involving online gambling and fraud.
9 foreign nationals who entered Myanmar via border routes, including through neighbouring countries such as Thailand, and engaged in online gambling and telecom fraud in Myawady, Maetawthale area in Kayin State have been apprehended. Efforts are underway to promptly repatriate them to their respective countries. The Kayin State government’s Security and Border Affairs Minister Colonel Min Thu Kyaw is working with relevant authorities to gather necessary personal data and records for repatriation.
A total of 5,745 foreign nationals who had illegally entered Myanmar were detained and investigated from 30 January to 12 March 2025. Of these, 2,763 were repatriated to their countries via Thailand following due legal process. The remaining 2,982 foreign nationals are ready for repatriation to their respective countries and they are being securely managed.
The government continues to tackle telecom fraud operations by coordinating with international organizations from neighbouring countries to prevent online gambling and telecom fraud operations at Myanmar’s borders.
